Club History |
The following is a brief history of the Gorey Tennis Club from when it was founded to the present day situation.
If you require further information on the club then please contact a member of the club committee to find out more.
The following is a brief history:
- The first committee meeting of Gorey Tennis Club was held on the 24th July 1967 and on the 15th May 1968 the constitution of Gorey Tennis Club was adopted.
- The official opening of two hard tennis courts took place in June 1968.
- In 1969 a team was entered in the Provincial Towns Cup for the first time and Gorey Tennis Club won it in 1973.
- Extra land was purchased with the intention of laying two further courts and building a club house in 1976. In 1977 planning permission was granted to erect a building and in 1978 the official opening of the clubhouse took place.
- In the 1980s there was a decline in the interest in tennis which resulted in the selling of the clubhouse to Gorey Boxing Club to clear all outstanding debts.
- In November 1992 a public meeting was held to revitalise Gorey Tennis Club and a new committee was formed.
- In 1993 the original two courts were resurfaced and floodlit. This was funded from the residue of the sale of the clubhouse and membership subscriptions by way of a three year membership offer.
- The tennis club went from strength to strength and in June 1998 a new club house was officially opened. All four courts were resurfaced with a synthetic surface in May 2000 and an extension to our clubhouse was opened in November 2006.
